Pair of Antique Face Screens With Colored Penwork Circa 1820

Please click on images to enlarge |  slide show  | thumbnail index | high resolution

Description:
Ref:   167fs    http://hygra.com/face/167fs

Pair of Antique Face screens decorated to one side in color depicting  scenes from theatre.

On the other side the compositions are  in the Chinoiserie tradition. Leaves dwarf people, a palm tree is short and weak and the fences are arbitrary.

The surround is drawn with flowers and leaves arranged in a symmetrical way. There is more than a hint of neoclassicism in the arrangement, but it is interspersed with flowers with unruly petals which hint at naturalism.

The handles are turned rosewood accented with gilding.

Origin: UK ;  Circa: 1820; Materials: maple and rosewood (handles).

Size:  Screens   22.3 cm wide by 18 cm; handles  23 cm long:   8.8 inches wide by   inches; handles 9.1  inches long.

Condition: Please refer to the  photographs for details of condition. Some of the corners have been lost over the years and been replaced. One screen has a repaired crack. There is some losses to the paintwork, but overall the screens are in fair condition.

One side of each screen is painted in color. The scene looks theatrical.  There is what looks like an orange on the point of the sword!

The colours are still vibrant. There are some losses to the paintwork: notably the plant-life in the middle.

The sword and the woman's headdress look as if they have been painted with metal.

It is interesting to compare with:A Regency three compartment Penwork Tea caddy decorated all over with exotic penwork scenes on a sycamore ground . Circa 1820.tcpendisfam10.jpg (140225 bytes)

There is a border of leaves end to end in penwork. The wood is maple or sycamore selected for its lightness of color. There are small losses to the wood. These have been repaired and can only be seen when looked at closely.
