Description:
Ref: 167fs http://hygra.com/face/167fs
Pair of Antique Face screens decorated to one side in color depicting
scenes from theatre.
On the other side the
compositions are in the Chinoiserie tradition. Leaves dwarf
people, a palm tree is short and weak and the fences are arbitrary.
The surround is drawn with
flowers and leaves arranged in a symmetrical way. There is more than a
hint of neoclassicism in the arrangement, but it is interspersed with
flowers with unruly petals which hint at naturalism.
The handles are turned
rosewood accented with gilding.
Origin: UK ; Circa:
1820; Materials:
maple and rosewood (handles).
Size: Screens 22.3 cm wide by
18 cm;
handles 23 cm long: 8.8 inches wide
by inches; handles 9.1 inches long.
Condition: Please refer to the photographs for details of condition.
Some of the corners have been lost over the years and been replaced. One
screen has a repaired crack. There is some losses to the paintwork, but
overall the screens are in fair condition.
