Description:
Ref:   165fs    http://hygra.com/face/165fs

Antique Face Screen in paper with Watercolours of  Hamstall Ridware. C. 1810.

One side shows "A West View of Hamstall Ridware" and the other "An East View of Hamstall Ridware".  The drawing is very fine and suggests a view from some distance. The west view is dominated by a large expanse of sky, the west features water and land in front of the church of St Michael and All Angels.

In 1806, Jane Austen, her mother and sister travelled to Hamstall Ridware, Staffordshire, to visit Edward Cooper, Mrs Austen's nephew, visiting Leigh relatives at Adlestrop en route. This coincided with the death of the Hon. Mary Leigh of Stoneleigh in Warwickshire. Mrs Austen's cousin, the Reverend Thomas Leigh, expected to succeed her. He invited his Austen cousins to accompany him to Stoneleigh Abbey on their way to Hamstall. Elements of Jane Austen's experience on this northern tour can be traced in her novels.
