Face Screen Painted on silk, depicting a girl holding a face screen
is painted on silk, a scene at the tea table, the expensive fashionable drink
of the 18th century.
It rather proves the point-the fashionable
lady is holding her face screen while her friend imparts some gossip. A
gallant stands by in a characteristic pose.
handle is in carved wood and gilded.
The silk is stretched on a
; Circa: 1780; Materials: silk and wood .
Size: Screen 24 cm
wide by 24 cm; handle 21 cm long: 9.4 inches wide by 9.4
inches; handle 8.4 inches.
refer to the above photographs for details of condition. Repaired at some
stage by backing with stronger silk. A miracle of survival.
