Description:
Ref:   121fs    http://hygra.com/face/121fs

Pair of Antique embossed paper Face Screens with petit point embroidered metal mesh centres.  Circa 1830.

The frames are embossed in the neoclassical style with symmetrically arranged acanthus leaves and shell patterns. The lower parts are embossed with an identical flower on each side, which although symmetrically arranged, introduce a hint of realism which is developed in the centre.

Delicately embroidered with roses, daisies and blossom, the flowers are true to nature.

A harmonious marriage of neoclassicism and romanticism, this is an unusual pair of screens in more ways than one. Most likely the embroiderer took her work to a professional screen maker and had it framed.

The handles are also unusual in that they are carved rather than turned. The tops are of symmetrical acanthus leaves, a feature which echoes the top of the embossed frame.

Looking at the size of this pair, I think they perhaps belonged to a young girl, perhaps a child and the embroidered panels were her own work.

Origin: UK ;  Circa:1830; Materials: paper, metal, thread and wood.

Size:  Screen 20 cm wide on top by 14cm (top to end of leaves on handle); handle 20.2 cm long: 7.8 inches wide by 5.5 inches; handle 8 inches.

Condition:  Please refer to the above photographs for details of condition. Note a leaf piece is missing from one of the handles.

The embossing is raised. I mention this because in some of the photos there is an optical illusion which makes the embossing appear as de-bossing.

Paper embossing was developed in the 19th C and in the UK is inseparably linked with the firm of Dobbs.
