Description:
Ref:   112fs    http://hygra.com/face/112fs

Pair of Antique Face Screens in papier mâché. C. 1850.

The framing of the central pictures is in gold fine “fillet” a term used for describing fine hand gilding done by master craftsmen. It is in the rococo style and compliments the contours of the outline. It also evokes a sense of the exotic, which the paradisiacal birds reflect in their spectacular plumage. The central pictures depict bunches of flowers, a rose, a passion flower, a tulip, a daisy and some small fine blooms on one, roses, a spectacular feathery flower and tiny fine jasmine(?) on the other.

The painting is of high quality. Some of the plumage is painted over gold which gives it a wonderful iridescence. The composition too is expertly orchestrated, with a bird on each side perching on a twig and an exotic flower crowning the floral arrangement. This is the work of one of the professional painters who worked for makers of papier mâché.

The handles are of turned wood with traces of gilding.

The handles are finely turned some of the central section is then carved, which would have made the handle more tactile, to spin it between the thumb and fore finger. How to hold your screen.

There are traces of   gilding in sections.
