A figured  rosewood box , the grain on the front and top changing from dark brown to golden, giving an almost three dimensional quality. It has lines of white metal, a pewter alloy,  inlaid parallel and close to the sides.   The inside is lined with its original blue paper. There is lift-out tray with mitered beveled edge some of the divisions are missing. The layout would have been for cotton spools and sewing. The tray now has removable pads of blue velvet making the box suitable for jewelry or precious mementos.  There is a space under the tray, again lined with the manufacturer's paper. The lid is lined with faded blue silk. I wonder if the blue of the paper and the blue of the silk  were once closer. There is a catch which enables the pad to open down. There is a document wallet behind. Circa 1830.
