A box in a striking combination of ash and ice-birch veneers, banded and delineated, with a carrying handle on the top and bone escutcheon. Circa 1780

A box of pleasing proportions combining two woods rarely found on boxes, the ice birch rarely found at all on any objects. This is the only box we have ever seen with such large panels of this wood. 

Origin: UK;  Circa: 1780; 

Size: 18.5 cm wide by 13 cm by 11 cm:  7.28 inches wide by  5.1 inches by  4.3 inches.

Condition: good overall; good age wear and patination; working lock and key; see images

The front of the box: The striations in the ash have been used very effectively, to form a slanting 
frame around the centre of the piece. The ash part is delineated with ebony.

The frame/ebony/ash pattern continues on the side of the box.

The back is rhe same as the front, without the escutcheon, but showing the hinges.

The top is accented with an elegant handle in a pleasing unfussy curving shape, which compliments the straight lines of the box.

The interior shows its age. The construction wood is straight grained pine.

Very unusual lock. 

Working lock and key. The escutcheon is bone
