Description:
Anglo Indian Vizagapatam radiating black buffalo  horn  antique fitted sewing box of dramatic curved shape standing on turned horn feet having a lift out horn edged sandalwood tray with three further radiating horn lids. Circa 1820-1845.

Working lock and key

 

Origin:  India ;  Circa: 1820-1845 ; Materials:  Buffalo horn sandalwood.

Size: 25.5 cm wide by 18 cm by 17.8 cm:   10 inches wide by  7.1 inches by  7  inches.

Condition: good overall; working lock and key;  some cracking  to the horn especially on the cavetto curved panels of the lid see images

The inside has a sandalwood tray with horn edges and three radiating horn lids.

There is a further compartment in the lid.

The form of this box is characteristic of the architectural shapes of early Regency. Although, in Anglo Indian boxes the early 19th century shapes continued, the complexity and quality of this piece points to an early date.

The feet are turned horn.

 The knob on the top is both turned and carved. The shape is almost organic.
