Antique Face Screen in painted  silk. C.1790.

This is a beautifully painted screen. The flowers are botanically correct and shaded so both the delicacy and movement are hinted at. It is very much in the Chinese form and probably painted in Canton

The art of painting on silk was perfected in China and much appreciated by the Europeans when they embraced this newly encountered culture in the 18th century.

The handle is in bone and unfortunately broken.

The silk is stretched on a wire hoop. The silk is semi transparent allowing the painting to show from both sides.

Origin: UK, China ;  Circa: 1790 ; Materials: silk and bone.

Size:  Screen 25.5 cm wide by 25.5 cm; handle 5cm long: 10 inches wide by 10 inches; handle 2  inches.

Condition:  Please refer to the above photographs for details of condition.
