Description:
Ref:  119fs    http://hygra.com/face/119fs

An Antique embossed paper Face Screen with central watercolour of flowers.

The embossed surround of this screen is simply magnificent. It transcends the neoclassical style with the sheer vitality of the design. The acanthus leaves curl and undulate, the multi-level texture creates an illusion of nature, with sharp definitions and curved surfaces. The Prince of Wales feathers are crowning the top, while symmetrically arranged garlands of flowers strike a romantic note without upsetting the harmony. On the base a very alert eagle spreads its wings, his keen eye observing (the company?), his talons gripping the twirling leaves. He is carrying the whole artwork on his back. The frame creates an impression of strength and solidity which is there to protect the delicate fragility of the painted blooms. It is almost certainly the work of Henry  Dobbs of London.

The central panel is beautifully painted with blue periwinkle, purple-blue flowers (Jacob’s ladder?) and a ragged poppy, its delicate petals blowing in the wind while a bud is undulating ready to burst.

The combination of the frame and the expertly arranged and painted picture show a  virtuoso mind at work: the fragility of nature in the context of a fixed classical past.

The gilded handle appears simple but it is well proportioned and fluted  in the manner of a classical column as it widens, before in concludes in a final elegant ball.

Origin: UK, Henry Dobbs ;  Circa: 1825 ; Materials: paper and wood.

The embossing is raised. I mention this because in some of the photos there is an optical illusion which makes the embossing appear as de-bossing.

Paper embossing was developed in the 19th C and in the UK is inseparably linked with the firm of Dobbs.
