Description:
Ref:   118fs    http://hygra.com/face/118fs

Pair of Antique papier mâché Face Screens painted with exotic birds and flowers. The screens are framed in a rococo design finely executed in gold. This delicate work was referred to as “line” or “fillet” and it was executed by master craftsmen often using a brush made of squirrel tail hair. The main picture could have been painted by another artist who specialised in birds and flowers. When the painting is of such high quality it is the work of properly trained artists, who decorated objects to supplement their income. Unfortunately such work is not signed as the manufacturers kept their talented artists secret for commercial considerations. The work however speaks for itself.

On one screen a peacock sweeps down over a fountain which is ingeniously integrated with the rococo framing design. A bunch of flowers, roses, bindweed, tulip, forget-me-nots and passion flower are painted in a naturalistic way at the front. Beautifully shaded, their bright colours harmonise with the exotic gold patterns to create an enchanting fantasy.

On the second screen a parrot flies over a bouquet of flowers, a fountain supported on unreal gossamer gold to the right. Again a beautiful enchantment.

The gilded handles are turned in wood.
