wb141: Antique writing box / lap desk, the top and front decorated
with marquetry in contrasting rosewood and birds eye maple
depicting stylized themes from nature, opening down to reveal a
green baize velvet writing surface and compartments for pens
and writing instruments. There are compartments for holding paper
under the flaps. Circa 1840

Size: 40.5cm by 23cm by 12.5cm: 16 inches by 9 inches by 4.9 inches.
Condition: Good
over all, some ware to the writing surface, working lock and
key.

The marquetry on this
box draws its inspiration from native plants. The treatment is
formal. Note the strong treatment of the fern and the stylized thistles.
