The box opens  a fitted interior with embossed leather writing surface, and compartments for paper and writing instruments

Detail of the brass inlay to the top and front. The brass contrasts with the rich color of the coromandel ebony.

Detail of the gold and blind embossing of the original writing surface. The blind embossing depicts a classical Greek key pattern.  The stylized gold embossed floral motif in the fashion of the mid 19th C.  

There are compartments for holding paper under the writing surface.
