Description:
WB153: Antique figured rosewood writing box with rounded edges,
and countersunk brass carrying handles, inlaid to the top and front with
fine inlays of mother of pearl depicting stylized curved
foliage, opening to an embossed leather (replacement) writing surface
and compartments for writing implements and paper. The box also has
secret drawers hidden behind a sprung panel. Circa 1840
Circa: 1840.
Size: 40.5 cm by 24.5 cm by 15.5 cm: 16 inches by
9.7 inches by 6.1 inches.
Condition: Good
over all, working lock and key. See images.

Detail: The replacement green
leather writing surface is framed mitered
rosewood facings.

The fluid mother of pearl inlay contrasts with
the dark rich figure and color of the rosewood and depicts floral
motifs.

The central decoration to the
top depicts birds at a bird bath.

at with magnification the fine marks left by the piercing saw are
just visible.

nest of secret drawers concealed behind a sprung panel
