Maple Two Compartment Tea Caddy with Original Prints Circa 1795.

A two compartment maple caddy decorated with prints of birds on the top and front. Such decoration only survives rarely when the original varnish remains undisturbed.

Similar work to this with Neoclassical scenes is on a caddy bearing the label of "Robinsons Manufactory, 33 Piccadilly and Tunbridge Wells".

Robinsons were in business from 1797- 1818.

Another caddy is at Temple Newsam Leeds.

Dimensions:
8.35" wide by 4.25"deep by 5" tall.

These small prints were made specifically for decoration.

The central division and perhaps lids are missing but the caddy retains traces of the original lead lining. Unusually the  top also has trace leading.

For the historical context of this caddy read the relevant part of Antigone's Online Antique Box Book. If you click here you will go there.
We have written a highly illustrated book on Antique Boxes and Tea caddies which is being published by Schiffer Books USA. This tea caddy has been specially photographed for inclusion.
