Amboyna Veneered Tea Chest, Circa 1845. |
A strikingly formed tea chest veneered in amboyna, the intricate
figure contrasted with black edgings and feet. The black strip on the base
is a later restoration.

Front view showing the form which is most unusual. Although
concave, the central part is quite straight, giving the piece a
monumental strength. This is characteristic of the second phase of
neoclassicism which was inspired by Egyptian forms.

Inside the canister tops are also veneered in amboyna. The bowl is
not original. It is in molded glass but fits well!

The hinges are particular and have a complex stopping mechanism.
