Some details of a captains box of
about 1800. The pictures show a screw which is inserted
in the hole and turned with the key which is kept in the
slot when not in use. This enables the box to be secured
in stormy seas. These boxes often have individual and
complex interiors. The picture on the right shows a
pull out box under which there are further secret
compartments.
The brass inserts in the corners, make the box
structurally stable in changing, often high humidity.
