Antique Fully Fitted Rosewood Sewing Box by R. Dalton with Mother of Pearl Inlay Circa 1830

Rosewood fully fitted sewing box of rectangular form with rounded edges  finely inlaid with mother of pearl  depicting stylized flora.  The box retains its original  compartmentalized  tray covered in  gold accented blue paper with gold embossed Morocco leather supplementary lids.  The box retains its original sewing tools; The eight spools have turned and carved mother of pearl tops.
Inside the lid there is a panel of rushed blue silk framed by gold embossed blue coloured leather.  A catch holds the panel in place. There is a document wallet behind it.  The box is labeled R Dalton. Circa 1830

The box is labeled: Dalton, Maker, 85 Regent St. London.

Dalton – Manufacturer 85 Quadrant, Regent St. London ”. Examples of Dalton’s work always bear the hallmark of quality and date mostly from the second quarter of the nineteenth century. Detail of one of the supplementary lids. The gold embossing is particularly fine. The pull is turned and carved mother of pearl. 

 

The box retains its  sewing tools: the tweezers the bodkin and the hook have carved mother of pearl handles.

The eight spools have turned pierced and carved  mother of pearl tops. the other side is made from bone. This form of spool comes apart enabling reels to be put on.
