Box veneered in well figured mahogany with brass edgings and flat-folding handles. It has an unusual interior arrangement and a side drawer. Inside the lid there is an “envelope” 
compartment behind the velvet panel. Circa 1850.
Origin: UK or possibly France. The structure of the box is very much in the English tradition. The interior is well constructed and rather unusual.  The lock with its round holes in the lock-plate is French.

The box opens to an unusual interior. Small tears and slight wear to the velvet near the catch on the panel inside the lid. 

The two lids on the side compartments have been recovered in red cotton 
velvet, a close match to the original ruched velvet of the back panel.

The back flap opens to an original embossed leather surface. The lower part further opens 
into an “envelope”.

The side velvet covered lids are removable and the central small tray is also removable. Underneath one of the lids there is a small tray which is also removable. The bottom is covered in the original cream silk.

 The interior without the lids or the small central tray. The right well under the lids is deeper and empty. The other side has two supports for the small tray too.

The round holes in the lock plate indicate a possible French origin; certainly the  lock is French.  

The top edges of the divisions which are made of mahogany have rounded rosewood facings.

The dovetail constructed side drawer. It opens by pulling the handle. The bottom has been fitted with velvet 
covers. The red leather of the divisions is original.

The drawer is released by removing the brass pin which passes through the side. 

The figure is very rich and is successfully accented with stringing and a central plaque.

 The box has counter sunk side carrying handles. When not in use they become flush with the sides of the box

The figure of the wood on the front is particularly well figured.

 The underside has a central piece of embossed leather framed by mytered rosewood facings.

The rounded brass is used to protect all the edges.
