Double caddy in the neoclassical style decorated in penwork circa 1800
The inspiration for this style of decoration would have been
derived from illustrations, or possibly first- hand knowledge of
paintings found on the walls of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
There are depictions of winged beasts flanking the mask of a satyr to
the sides, and dolphins face each other on either side of an ancient
vessel, their tails blossoming into swirling acanthus leaves at the
back, and winged beasts flanking the central motif in a
symmetrical fashion to the front. Inside there are two lidded
compartments for tea. These retain a little of their original leading.
