Anglo Indian Writing Slope
Veneered all over with Ivory and Sadeli Mosaic Circa 1840. |
An unusual writing slope overlaid
with sadeli mosaic and ivory. 11.5"wide. Mid 19th century.
This writing slope is veneered
in ivory, with circles and lines of sadeli
mosaic. The sadeli mosaic predominates.
The patterns are juxtaposed with
skill and aesthetic awareness.
The pictures can be super-sized

The writing tablet
retains its original velvet.

The designs patterns look deceptively
simple.
The fact is they emerged from a
culture, which had mastered geometry and understood how to generate a
pattern from a set number of points.
The patterns are harmoniously
composed.
The
incredible complexity is not immediately apparent to the uninitiated.

Under the flap there is a
compartment for paper. The box has its original inkwell. the pen-tray
is ebony and inlaid with further circles of mosaic.
