End view showing the well patinated surface.

The writing surface velvet is a replacement.

There is a side drawer which is released by pulling the brass rod upwards.

Detail showing the hand cut dovetails and the handle. Note the early type of screws used for fixing the brass.

Inside the top part showing a compartment for papers. There is an old repair on the flap which has been strengthened with a cleat. The ink stains bear witness to early pencraft.

Note how the top box is transformed into a reading stand.

Detail showing the adjustable prop used when the box is in the reading stand position.

The other side also has a handle. Note the stop which stops the handle from opening too far. The box retains its well patinated original finish.

For the historical context of this writing box read the relevant part of Antigone's Online Antique Box Book. If you click here you will go there.
