Description:
A Coromandel veneered writing box accented with engraved brass
plaque and escutcheon.
Deceptively simple, this is in fact a box of very high quality with
secret drawers, Bramah
lock and an additional lock on one of the flaps.
Origin: England
Circa: 1870
Materials: Coromandel
on mahogany.
Size: 35cm by 24.5 cm by 15.5 cm: 13.8 inches by 9.5 inches by
5.3 inches.
Condition: Good: Wear
and losses on the internal leather surround to the velvet lining.
Working Bramah lock and key. Working interior lock and key.

The box open. The velvet is a replacement but the embossed leather
surround is original.
There are compartments for
papers under the writing surfaces.

The interior of the box is in mahogany. The top part is more complex
than usual in that it features slots for notes etc, as well as the
pen tray and inkwells. There are two secret drawers underneath
concealed by a mahogany flap. Here the flap is in the open
position.

The escutcheon is finely engraved, providing
understated, subtle decoration.

The top showing the interesting figure of the wood
with its golden striations. The engraved plaque, like the escutcheon,
provides a fine subtle note to the austerity of the piece.

Original inkwell. There is an additional lock on one of the flaps enameling
papers to be kept more securely and privatly.
