Description:
WB484: Writing slope in rosewood  with mother of pearl inlay circa 1835. This is a writing slope of good quality. The outside is veneered in saw cut rosewood inlaid with mother of pearl and white metal. The inlay is executed with precision.   Working lock and key.

Materials:

Size: 35.7 cm by 25 cm by 9.5cm at the back tapering to 6.5 cm at the front: inches by inches by inches.

Condition: Good overall see images working lock and key.

The box opens to a velvet  (original) writing surface and compartments for writing implements and paper. 

The compartment for paper is under the flap.

The box has two replacement screw top inkwells. Although these are of new manufacture they are similar to those that would have been used by 18th and 19th Century users of the box. 

The writing surface is framed by a crossbanding of tulipwood with the grain running on the diagonal for interest

Inside the box has a pen tray and lift up lids. Bathe of the lids  have the absolutes of light and dark in rosewood.

The box has a working lock and key.

 Part of the fun of looking at a box like this is the match of the pieces of veneer all of which look as if  they have been sawn from the same log. The figure of mid dark and dark is exquisite.
