A rare late 18th Century stained beech tambour top writing box in the manner of a drawing in The Cabinet-Maker's London Book of Prices 1788.  by Thomas Shearer. having twin carrying handles.

Origin: United Kingdom

Circa: Circa 1800.

Materials: Beech

Size: 29cm by 24cm by 17cm high at back: 11.4 inches wide by 9.5 inches by 6.7 inches at the back.

Condition: Very good overall.  working lock and key.

The box  has a drawer operated by the "tambour" method: as the role top of the box is opened the drawer emerges.

Detail: the slatted tambour which is made from molded slats fixed to a flexible canvas backing.

The box  has a drawer operated by the "tambour" method: as the drawer is opened the inkwells and blotting powder are revealed. 

 

The writing flap which is still covered in its original green baize is then opened down to rest on the open drawer.

The drawer is of dovetail construction with a bead molding run into the front.
