Description: An octagonal tortoiseshell box which encapsulates the stylish frivolous pursuits of the fashion-conscious of its period. It is both shaped and decorated in high neoclassical style. The stylized flora is either draped symmetrically, festooned, or curled in a controlled curve. There is a slight concession to  idiosyncrasy in that the central two sides of the lid have different designs. The inlay is in piqué posé. See Antique Boxes, Tea Caddies, and Society, 1700--1880
