Description:
An octagonal tortoiseshell box which encapsulates the stylish
frivolous pursuits of the fashion-conscious of its period. It is
both shaped and decorated in high neoclassical style. The stylized
flora is either draped symmetrically, festooned, or curled in a
controlled curve. There is a slight concession to idiosyncrasy
in that the central two sides of the lid have different designs. The
inlay is in piqué posé. See Antique Boxes, Tea Caddies, and Society, 1700--1880 Antigone Clarke & Joseph O'Kelly, ISBN: 0764316885 pages 103-104.
Inside there is a tiny perfume bottle and slits for
toothpicks.
Origin: England
Circa: 1790
Materials: Tortoiseshell
on wood and silver.
Size: 2.6" tall. 6.6cm.
Condition: Fine: small
chip on side of top lid under the curled design. |
