A fully fitted brass inlaid rosewood sewing box with gadrooned edges gilt side carrying handles and gilt feet.  Circa 1810.

Description:
A fully fitted brass inlaid rosewood sewing box with gadrooned edges gilt side carrying handles and gilt feet. Inside the fully fitted sewing tray contains a set of turned ivory spools. 

Origin: United Kingdom.

Circa: 1810.

Materials: Rosewood brass.

Size: 23cm wide by 18cm, 14.2cm high including feet: 9.1inches 7.1 inches 5.6 inches high.

Condition: good,  working lock with replacement key.

In the upper part there is a document wallet. In the lower a fully fitted lift-out  sewing tray complete with a set of 5 turned Ivory spools.  The inside is lined in yellow paper and water silk

The inlaid brass ornament is of separate form but more flowing and expansive than earlier examples

 

The inlay is bold and particularly formed to follow the shape of the panels and emphasize the pyramid structure.

 The turned Ivory spools are also milled and a further unusual feature is that they are the same at both ends.
