Description:
An artist painted Papier
mâchè sewing box of rectangular form having its original
fully fitted tray with mother of pearl turned
and carved spools and sewing tools.
The finely painted landscape scenes are painted on a gold ground
which gives a iridescence.
Origin: United Kingdom
Circa: 1835
Materials: Papier
mâchè
Size: 23cm wide by 16cm, 8.5cm high including feet: 9.1
inches 6.3 inches 3.4 inches high.
Condition: good.
The painting is all original and has not been repainted. The hinges
are replacement.

Inside there is a fully
fitted sewing tray with mother of pearl toped spools and matching waxer.

The spools are turned and
carved and have bone screw on shafts. This is an early form of
spool.

There are two Chinese
export engraved mother of pearl silk winders.

The painting on the top
depicts a between a bonneted female wearing a red shawl and
a hated man amidst Gothic ruins. The iridescent gold ground gives a sense
of a meeting by moonlight.
