SB452: Rosewood veneered box with stylized brass and shell decoration circa 1870.
This is an unusual box which combines a small writing box with a sewing tray. The engraved brass, mother-of-pearl and abalone decoration is fluid but stylized, combining the formality of neoclassicism with the naturalism of the Victorian era. The tray and the ‘envelope’ compartment are original and hardly worn. The framing on the ruched surface is gold embossed. Working lock and key.
