Description:
Sb451: Satinwood and rosewood veneered box with stylised floral
design circa 1835.
A beautifully elegant box. The composition contrasts the rich brown
of the rosewood with the luminous sheen of the satinwood in stylized
floral motifs, inspired both by earlier ‘seaweed’ patterns and
later neoclassical designs. The inlay is executed with impeccable
precision and control and becomes an integral part of the whole
structure of the box. The top central plaque is in mother of pearl
and gives an extra punctuation to the composition. Small repairs to
two of the corners on the top, seen when carefully examined. The
tray is original and so is the blue paper and metal ‘bead’
edging on the tray. The velvet covers are re-covered. Working lock
and key.
