There is a tooled leather document wallet in the lid. Inside the document wallet there is a label "Briggs Manufacturer, 27 Piccadilly".

The entry for Briggs in the Dictionary of English Furniture Makers, 1660-1840 reads:
"Briggs, Thomas London, cm, writing desk and dressing case maker (1819-35. (D) Addresses given at 20 Newington Causeway, 1819-23, and at 27 Piccadilly, 1829-36)"

Briggs is still listed at the Piccadilly address in the 1865 directory.

The box has two Bramah locks with the same key. The main lock-plate is stamped  "PATENT S MORDAN & Co London.

The box has rounded brass to all eight edges which are affixed with small brass pins ground flat with the surface. This form of brass is both structural and decorative. The almost black coromandel (ebony) has a beautiful rich colour.

There are countersunk brass carrying handles to the sides.

The patented Brahma lock.

To engage the key is pushed into the lock. The sprung levers of the lock are brought to the right positions by grooves cut in the barrel of the key rather than the flag. This results in a very neat small key.
