The box has a lower drawer
which opens with a spring mechanism. The release button is on the back
facing between the hinges. The drawer releases with a satisfying click.
The upper part of the box has
been relined with marbled paper and velvet.
|
There is a lift out gold
embossed leather framed mirror and a document wallet in the lid.
The mirror, which clicks in
place on the inside top part, is original as is its embossed leather
framing.
The velvet on the reverse of
the mirror is a replacement.

The
burr walnut of is of dense figure displaying the ripples and swirls
naturally occurring in parts of the log obtained from carefully coppiced
wood near the stump of the tree.
The central plaque and
the escutcheon are mother of pearl. There is no further
decoration, the attraction being the very pretty figure of the wood.
