A
rosewood veneered box, inlaid with white metal lines and mother of
pearl in a stylized flower pattern having a lift out tray with divisions
and a side drawer fitted for jewelry, a document wallet retaining the
label "Pearce's fancy Repository".
The
workmanship is of high standard; for example, the box is edged with a
rounded piece of wood which finishes it elegantly and also protects it.
Origin: United Kingdom
Circa: 1840
Materials: Rosewood, mother
of pearl.
Size: 30.8cm wide by 22.5cm by 17.8cm: 12 inches wide by
8.6 inches by 7 inches.
Condition: Good overall,
working lock with key.

The box opens up to reveal
a liftout tray. There is also a velvet lined side drawer with original
divisions. The sprung drawer which is of dovetail construction
is held closed by a brass pin.
The flap in the lid retains
its original finely embossed leather framing.

Detail of the drawer, the
divisions are covered in gold embossed leather. The compartments retain
their original blue silk and velvet cushioning. The long compartment is
for rings.

There is a label on the inside of the Document wallet
which reads:
"from
Pearce's fancy Repository,
77, Cornhill.
The label, 'Pearce Maker 77 Cornhill'. exists on other
boxes. This London maker is known to have made leather boxes
and mahogany cased, travelling chess sets.
