Antique French Rosewood Box with Boxwood Inlay Circa 1835.

Description:
An elegant French rosewood box with boxwood inlay and rounded rosewood corners. The box is lined with its original  green leather and velvet having a liftout tray and document wallet lined with yellow and green silk.

Origin: France

Circa: 1835. 

Materials: Rosewood boxwood

Size: 32.15cm wide by 22.5 cm by 11.5 cm:   12.8 inches wide by  8.9 inches by  4.5 inches.

Condition: good overall, working lock and key. there is some veneer cracking to the top which does not effect the structure.

There is a document wallet in the lid. The catch holding the document wallet is steel. This feature as well as the round lock tennons are  particular to French boxes.

 The figure of the rosewood in the top is dramatic and contrasts with the boxwood inlay. The inlay is inspired by classical motives. The framing geometric inlay is derived from the Greek-key pattern.

 Detail of the top corner. The box is edged with a solid rosewood rounded filet of rosewood separated from the central panel with a boxwood line.
