Antique Rosewood Box Inlaid with
Mother of Pearl, Abalone and Metal in the French Taste.

Description:
A mid Victorian rosewood box inlaid with mother of pearl, abalone,
and metal, depicting flowers, having a velvet lined liftout tray and
wallet for letters.
Origin: UK
Circa: 1860
Materials: Rosewood,
mother of pearl abalone.
Size: 30.5 cm wide by 22.5 cm by 12.5 cm: 12 inches wide by
8.9 inches
by 4.9 inches.
Condition: overall
good; working lock and key; the liftout tray is a replacement.

The thick saw-cut highly
figured rosewood is inlaid with contrasting mother of pearl abalone
copper and brass.
The box is edged with filets
of solid rosewood which have been gently rounded

Detail: The inlay in the top features
an inlay of birds with a fountain. The natural colors and graining of
the shell, both mother of pearl and abalone. have been used to give the
composition life.

The small pieces of mother of pearl would have been cut out
with jewelers piercing saw. Recesses are then cut in the rosewood
to take the inlay elements.
This type of work was influenced by the French use of shell and metal
in inlay.

The thick saw-cut
highly figured rosewood is inlaid with contrasting mother of pearl
abalone copper and brass.
The composition of the top is
exquisite. In the centre there is a formal display depicting bouquet of
flowers and foliage.
