Antique Shaped penwork box with lift out tray circa 1825

Description:
JB553: Shaped penwork box of complex casket form, the sides decorated with depictions of flora the top has a depiction of figures in front of a cottage with ruins in the background. The box has been relined and has a liftout tray. The box stands on clawed feet and has embossed gilded brass drop handles. Circa 1830.

Origin: UK  Circa:  1825. Materials: Sycamore.

Size: 25.1 cm wide by 17.5 cm by 13 cm including feet: 9.9  inches wide by  6.9 inches by 5.1 inches including feet.

Condition: see pictures: some rubbing to the penwork. working lock and key.

The box has been relined with handmade combed paper and has a liftout tray. 

There are  stylized motifs of flora  on the sides of the box including trailing oak leaves.

Pictures ‘observed from nature’ such as ruins, or natural scenes are usual at this period.

Penwork was often done by people at home and as such an individual’s idiosyncrasy is often reflected in the work.
