Antique Coromandel Box with lift out tray Circa 1850

Description:
JB521:  Antique box veneered in strongly figured  coromandel, with brass edging and central inlaid brass plaque, and a  working  lever lock with  key. The box is high quality, which continues into the  compartmentalized interior. It is lined in velvet and embossed leather. It has a lift-out tray. There is a document wallet in the lid. Circa 1850.

Origin: UK Circa: 1850 Materials: Coromandel and Brass.

Size: 33.5cm wide by 24cm by 14.5cm:  13.2 inches wide by  9.5 inches by  5.7inches.

Condition: see pictures; good overall. Some veneer cracking which does not effect the box structurally., working lock and key

The hinges and lock are silvered.

The framed panel in the lid has a mirror on its other side and a document wallet behind.

The lock plate is stamped "T Turner" and "patent".  I have not yet traced any information on Turner, locksmith. However he was clearly productive as many surviving writing boxes have Turner locks.   The lock  is lever lock. The lock plate as the hinges are engraved  and silvered.

 There is a further compartment under the tray which is lined in silk.

 The ruched velvet in the lid panel is original and shows some wear.

 

 

There is a document wallet in the lid and a lift out mirror.
