JB450
Rosewood veneered box in neoclassical form circa 1835.
A box inspired by the shapes of classical temples fashionable in the second phase of neoclassicism. The structure with its angled and tiered sections gives the impression of elegance and strength. The decoration in mother of pearl and white metal is restrained. It further
emphasizes the strength of the lines and enlivens the colour of the wood. The escutcheon and central motif in controlled
stylized flora give a note of softness. The original lift-out tray has been re-covered in cotton velvet. The inside of the lid is covered in the original ruched silk surrounded by gold-embossed leather. The handles are original albeit with some old breaks and repairs. The feet are not original. Working lock and key.
