JB419:
Mid Victorian box veneered in dark rosewood and decorated with
mother of pearl. The pattern of the decoration is controlled and
symmetrical but it also swirls in the more naturalistic style of the
later 19th century. The motifs are of stylised flora
which is accented with centres of darker abalone shell. The box has
a spring-out side drawer covered in original silk. The interior has
been fitted with another tray. The back lid retains its original
drop down envelope compartment covered in original ruched velvet.
Small repairs and minute losses to mother of pearl visible
under close scrutiny. The box has a working lock and key. Circa
1870.
