Antique Mid Victorian Box Inlaid with Mother of Pearl and Abalone circa 1870

Description:
JB419: Mid Victorian box veneered in dark rosewood and decorated with mother of pearl. The pattern of the decoration is controlled and symmetrical but it also swirls in the more naturalistic style of the later 19th century. The motifs are of stylised flora which is accented with centres of darker abalone shell. The box has a spring-out side drawer covered in original silk. The interior has been fitted with another tray. The back lid retains its original drop down envelope compartment covered in original ruched velvet.  Small repairs and minute losses to mother of pearl visible under close scrutiny. The box has a working lock and key. Circa 1870.
