JB409: Early 19th century box veneered in alternating stripes of satinwood and rosewood and decorated with cut steel pins, faceted in the manner of precious stones. The escutcheon and central inset are in mother of pearl. Although the cut steel fine decoration is usually associated with French Palais Royale work, this is an English box possibly decorated by French highly skilled craftsmen working in England. The box has been fitted with a lift-out tray. The box has a working lock and key. Circa 1815.
