JB405: Early 19th century box veneered in dark figured rosewood and decorated with cut steel pins. The steel was cut in the manner of precious stones and on this box it was arranged in a neoclassical pattern of symmetrical scrolls centred by a palmette motif. Cut steel work was popular for a short period of time during the late 18th century and the early 19th century. The work which is laboriously slow needs precision and skill of very high calibre. The box has been fitted with a lift-out tray. The box has a working lock and key. Crack on top veneer. Circa 1815.
