Description:A rosewood veneered box with a central panel in sycamore decorated with
a picture of a boy wearing a kilt and riding his horse. Very likely it
is meant to be Bonnie Prince Charlie. The work is executed in pyrography,
which is sometimes called "poker work". Although the box does
not have the typical Scottish hinge, it has a more solid look than
English boxes of the period and it is of Scottish inspiration.

The central panel of sycamore which depicts Bonnie Prince Charlie
uses not just pyrography to depict the picture but also the natural
grain and fleck of the wood. It is framed on a mitered rosewood molding.
The rosewood of the top and front is contrasted by having a band of
amboyna inlay. |      Please click on images to enlarge

        Detail of the top. The
rosewood of the top and front is contrasted by having a band of amboyna
inlay. This is both elegant and unusual. The whole box has a rich
        patina. |
