Victorian walnut veneered box inlaid in strips of geometric marquetry circa 1880

Description:

Box veneered in walnut and inlaid in strips of geometric marquetry of light and stained woods.

It is lined in new paper. (See our book Antique Boxes, Tea Caddies, and Society -- 1700--1880, ISBN: 0764316885  Antigone Clarke & Joseph O'Kelly, A Schiffer Book for collectors Chapter 6 and figures 98, 99, 100).

 Circa: 1880.

Condition: Small chips on veneer. 

Size: 8.7” x 5.6”, 3.7” tall. 23cm x17cm, 10.5cm tall. 22.3cm  x 14.2 cm x 9.5 cm.

It is lined in new paper; the paper is traditional marbled paper.

There are so many geometric patterns and sliced bits of wood to create it. 

I have made individual bits of this sort of inlay. 

It is  a lot of man hours to make this inlay. It is not perfect each element has been looked at by the unnamed maker. 

But the joy is in the individuality of the difference. some of these banded patterns were sold for a few months. Others were sold for longer. Some are just a strip in one box.
