Description:
A Japanese table cabinet with decorations in flat
and raised gold. The themes are of stylized mountains (Mount Fuji),
clouds, rocks, and trees characteristic of Japanese work; they are
executed in a striking manner.
The cabinet has 9
drawers making it ideal for personal possessions or an exotic spice cupboard.
Six of the drawers are behind the double doors.
Origin: Japan
Circa 1870
Condition: Minor expected

Materials: Wood lacquer
and gold
Size: 15.3" wide by 16.8"tall, the top gallery is a
further 7.5", and 7.2" deep: 38.9cm wide by 42.7cm
tall, the top gallery is a further 19cm, and 18.3cm deep.

The Doors open to reveal a
further six drawers.

It is not surprising that this work took
the USA and UK markets by storm at the end of the 19th Century
inspiring many western artists to do work with similar themes.

with flying birds and sail-boats. The clouds and rock formations are in
raised lacquer giving a three dimensional depth.

The flying cranes
on the side are significant in Japanese art. They symbolize a soaring towards
prosperity and spiritual enlightenment.
