Description:
Dramatically Shaped Coromandel ebony box with Mother of pearl inlay
having turned ebony handles, feet and gadrooning.
The form of this box is characteristic of the Regency but the mother
op pearl inlay dates it to late William IV or early Victorian period.
Origin: United Kingdom
Circa: 1835.
Materials: Coromandel
ebony and mother of pearl.
Size: 12" wide by 9.5" by 8.75" tall including

|
Condition: over all
good. Some veneer cracking which is not structural and which is usual
with ebony and coromandel some of the pictures have been taken to
emphasize this. The tray is a later replacement velvet lined and makes
the box suitable for jewelry.
Working lock and key.
|
|
In side there is a velvet
lined lift out tray (later) and the top is lined by contemporary rushed
silk framed by gilt embossed leather.
|
|
The front view really
shows off the dramatic shape. The curved veneering dark coromandel
would have difficult to do.
|
The top view: the mother of
pearl inlay is symmetrically laid out. The contrast of the iridescent
pearl is contrasted with the dark coromandel
|
|
|
Detail: The
mother of pearl inlay. Some of the ebony has been incut to give
vitality. This can be seen in the enlargement.
|
The top is lined by contemporary
rushed silk framed by gilt embossed leather.
|

|
The escutcheon is
turned and carved mother of pearl.
