 Chinese Export Lacquer Sewing  Box decorated with scenes of oriental life  circa 1850.

A Chinese export lacquer sewing box depicting oriental scenes within cartouches  framed in stylized flora.

It measures: 14" wide by 10.4" deep and 6.5" tall (including feet).

The design is overall attractive and decorative, but it is rubbed in many places. There are also repairs which show as just black. This is the fate for many lacquer boxes, as the gold tends to rub with age and the lacquer crack and perish.

The factor of condition has been taken into consideration in pricing this object. Fortunately the integrity of the box has not been compromised by attempts at "refreshing" and varnishing.  

The inside is partitioned for sewing tools.

There is a lower drawer with further decoration on the painting/calligraphy surface.
