Papier
mâché box made of cut papier mâché board and shaped
surround. It is exquisitely decorated with an oriental scene in mother
of pearl and gilding. The mother of pearl is not painted, but inserted
in small pieces selected for colour and grain. In the flicker of
candle-light the exotic building would have taken on a magical
quality. The quality and type of work, together with the theme
point to Alsager and Neville, or to their influence.
