Papier mâché two compartment tea caddy the japanned surface decorated with naturalistic paintings of flowers; The design is artfully orchestrated. Rococo trellised flora both frames and intersects the naturalistic  rendition of the frames and intersects the naturalistic rendition  of the the flowers and bird in a fluid cartouche. This is executed in gold leaf and provides a glamorous and exotic highlight against the subtlety  of the realistic colour of the main pictures. 

Origin: UK;  Circa: 1850; Materials: Papier Mâché.

Size: 20cm wide by 12.3 cm by 14.11 cm:  7.9  inches wide by  4.9 inches by   inches.

Condition: good overall; working lock and key; see images

Papier Mâché caddy beautifully painted with depictions of a peacock and flowers.

The caddy opens to a two compartment interior with supplementary lids. 

The design is artfully orchestrated. Rococo trellised flora both frames and intersects the naturalistic  rendition of the frames and intersects the naturalistic rendition  of the the flowers and bird in a fluid cartouche. This is executed in gold leaf and provides a glamorous and exotic highlight against the subtlety  of the realistic colour of the main pictures. 

Much of the original tin/leading survives.

Front: Tulip and wild roses interspersed with a diapered rococo design on the base. Unexpected juxtapositions attest to the flair of the artist.

Side: Wild and cultivated roses again accented with gold.

Side: lily of the valley  with gold trellised  flora.

The back is plain!

 On the top convolvulus, honeysuckle, rose passionflower and small flowers provide a foreground to the equally beautifully painted peacock.  

The caddy stands on turned feet. There is no makers mark.
